Liposuction Techniques Explained
Our cosmetic surgeons in Orange County offer three different types of liposuction to make sure you have the choice of treatments that works best for you.
Fluid-Injected (Tumescent) Liposuction
Before incorporating fluid injection into the liposuction treatment, fat extraction was performed “dry.” Without the extra fluid to help break up and emulsify fat cells, the process was more painful and the extent of treatment was more limited. During tumescent liposuction, a medicated solution is injected before the removal process begins, reducing discomfort and bruising and allowing a greater amount of fat removal.
Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
UAL also breaks up fat cells to facilitate removal, but uses ultrasonic energy in addition to tumescent liquid to do so. This technique allows for the use of low-pressure suction during the removal process, which can make the procedure gentler for more sensitive patients. UAL is also better at treating hard-to-reach fat cells in more fibrous, muscular areas of the body, like the male breast or the upper back.
Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)
This technique uses a special oscillating wand that breaks up the fat cells using mechanical energy. Since the cannula is smaller with PAL, the incisions are also smaller, and the surgery takes less time. PAL is combined with tumescent liposuction to just address more fibrous areas, while
external ultrasonic assisted liposuction is used on the larger fat deposits for greater efficiency.
Keep in mind that the skill of your surgeon is more important than the technique used. It takes the right touch and an eye for aesthetics to achieve the best liposuction results. Before booking your surgery, take a look at pro and cons of liposuction and before and after photos of patients in addition to asking questions about methods used.
