Do You Need a Thigh Lift?

Excess skin on the thighs can often be seen after significant weight loss, or it can simply be a part of the natural aging process. After the fat melts away, many areas of the body can be left with excessive amounts of skin, causing discomfort in clothing and a poor self-image. If you have one or more of the following issues as a result of a significant weight fluctuation or sagging skin, a thigh lift surgery may be right for you:

  • Loose or flabby thigh skin
  • Inner thigh rashes
  • Chaffing
  • Excess skin after weight loss
  • Disproportionate thighs

The Ideal Thigh Lift Candidate

  • Those with a saggy, loose appearance and poor elasticity to thigh skin as a result of age or genetics.
  • Women and men who have loose skin on their thighs following weight loss. These patients may also qualify for other procedures, such as a tummy tuck.

Your Thigh Lift Options

There are multiple types of thigh lifts to consider, and we’ll tailor your procedure directly to your individual cosmetic concerns. During your consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss the best fit for you.

Inner or Medial Thigh Lift

This technique addresses laxity from the inner thighs to the knees.

Mini Thigh Lift

This technique addresses sagging in the upper legs.

Bilateral or Outer Thigh Lift

This type of lift can be done in conjunction with a lower-body lift.

Posterior or Spiral Thigh Lift

This technique tightens the skin on the back of the thighs.

The Day of Your Thigh Lift Procedure

Your thigh lift procedure will be performed under general anesthesia and will likely take about two hours to complete. An incision will be made in the groin area beneath your bikini line, enabling your surgeon to remove excess thigh skin as necessary. The tissues below the incision will then be loosened, and the skin will be pulled up and tightened before the incision is closed with sutures.

Deep stitches can also be used to secure the skin and prevent any further sagging as your incision sites heal. Drains will be placed inside the incision site to help collect excess residual fluid that can build up after surgery, but these drains are usually removed after just a few days. We’ll give you a clear idea of what you can expect from your procedure and the recovery process during your consultation.

Your Recovery Process

Swelling and bruising following your thigh lift at CosmetiCare in Newport Beach will be most pronounced in the first weeks following surgery. During this time, it is extremely important to follow the guidelines of your surgeon and to continuously wear your supportive compression garments, so as to encourage proper healing.

The First Week

During the first week after a thigh lift, it is common to experience some pain in the area. You will also notice bruising and swelling around your incision site. You will be provided with oral pain medication so that you are comfortable during your recovery. You should avoid any strenuous types of activity such as running, driving, or exercising.

Two to Three Weeks

At this point, pain and bruising should begin to subside. Swelling will remain, but it will continue to go down with time and with the continuous use of a compression garment. By this time, most patients are able to return to work and resume lite activity such as walking. It is important to continue to refrain from strenuous activity at this time.

Six Weeks

By six weeks, most patients are typically healed enough to where they can go back to their regular routines. At this follow up appointment, your surgeon may clear you to resume all levels of strenuous activities. You’ll also start to notice the results of your thigh lift taking shape, especially as swelling continues to subside.

The Road to Your Final Results

Even though you’ll probably have some amount of swelling, the results of your surgery should be immediately noticeable. A thigh lift will create visible scars that may fade over time. Most patients feel that the results of their surgery far outweigh any scars, and a thigh lift can restore confidence by re-creating a more youthful appearance. Here’s a general idea of what you can expect as you look forward to your final results.

  • Immediately following surgery, you will be placed in a compression garment, similar to a tight girdle, to reduce swelling and help with the tightening of your thigh skin.
  • You will experience some discomfort which can be controlled with prescription pain medication.
  • You will have some swelling and bruising that should subside within one month.
  • You will be able to move around within a few days following surgery.
  • Most patients will be able to return to work within two weeks.
  • Sutures will typically be taken out within a week to ten days.
  • Minimal, light activities can be performed after about two weeks.
  • More strenuous activities can resume within six weeks.
  • After four to six months most of your postoperative symptoms should be gone.

I can't say enough about the team at CosmetiCare. It's been a great experience from beginning to end! My consultation was set up fast via text! The initial consult and pre-op with Dr. Reagan were easy and very informative. On the day of surgery, my nurse kept me at ease as I was very, very nervous. Post-op, everything went well and the doctor called to check on me the same evening. Every followup I've come to, everyone has been very attentive, extremely nice, and very helpful.
