Creating a More Attractive Facial Profile

Ear surgery (also known as otoplasty) is performed to improve the shape, position, and proportion of your ears. Ear surgery is often performed on children and adults alike, and can help prevent years of ridicule and teasing by one’s peers. A relatively quick procedure, ear surgery can correct a birth defect of the ear structure and for some patients, surgery is only needed on one ear.

Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits on a patient’s appearance and self-esteem. Whether to tuck protruding ears back or to reduce the size of large ears, ear surgery at CosmetiCare has become an increasingly popular procedure. Is Ear Surgery Right for Me?

One of the main reasons patients seek out ear surgery is to address any asymmetry between the two ears. This procedure creates a more natural shape of the ear without any noticeable scars and with very little downtime.

Anyone self-conscious about their ear appearance can benefit from ear surgery in Newport Beach, including:

  • Children and adults who have larger ears or protruding ears.
  • Those who have missing outer ear folds, or lobes.
  • Those who have been born with an abnormality or congenital deformity.
  • Those who have lost an ear as a result of injury or trauma.
  • Those who have stretched their earlobes and are looking to close and repair them.

Your Ear Surgery Experience

For some patients, local anesthesia may be considered as opposed to general anesthesia. You can discuss the best option for you during a consultation with your surgeon. During this consultation, you’ll learn everything you might need to know about your surgery and the techniques that’ll be used to create your results.

Patients should keep in mind that ear surgery will not result in “perfect” symmetry. However, most people are extremely pleased with their outcome, especially if they had realistic expectations prior to surgery. Some patients may choose an additional procedure to further enhance their facial symmetry, such as rhinoplasty to adjust the profile of their nose.

What is the Recovery After Ear Surgery?

Most patients are typically able to return to normal activities within a few days post-surgery. Your sutures will be removed after a week. You can expect your ears to be tender, swollen, and red for several weeks post-op. We’ll give you a detailed recovery timeline and thorough aftercare instructions that’ll help you stay comfortable as you rest and recover. After four to six weeks, you’ll be able to resume all normal activities, including sports.

How Will I Look & Feel After Ear Surgery?

After ear surgery at CosmetiCare in Newport Beach:

  • Adults and children are usually up and moving around within a few hours after surgery.
  • The patient’s head will be wrapped in a heavy bandage similar to a “turban” for several days, to cover and protect the ears.
  • It is typical for the ears to throb or ache for the first few days. Pain medication can help to reduce some of the mild discomfort during this period.
  • The bandages will be replaced with lighter bandages after a few days. Then your surgeon will recommend a headband be worn at night for a few weeks to protect the ears and ensure proper healing.
  • Stitches will typically be removed or dissolve after a week.
  • Contact sports and vigorous activities should be avoided while healing.
  • Typically after one to two weeks swelling and bruising resolve
  • The ears are fully healed around two to three months post-op.
  • Otoplasty surgical results are permanent.
