New to Botox? Here are some frequently asked questions you may be asking yourself:

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a type of neurotoxic protein that weakens or paralyzes the muscle. When the muscle can’t contract this makes wrinkles relax and soften.

What are the most common areas for Botox treatment?

The most common areas treated with Botox are the forehead, frown lines (between the eyebrows), crows feet, and neck lines.

What’s the difference between Botox and Dermal filler?

Botox freezes the muscles in the treated area to soften and relax wrinkles. Fillers use hyaluronic acid to fill in areas that have lost volume and smoothness.

How long does Botox last?

Botox typically lasts between 3 to 4 months. It’s common for first time patients to notice it lasts less than that, but see better results after the second treatment.

How often should I go in to get Botox?

As stated above, Botox typically lasts anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Therefore the recommended treatment is once every 3 to 4 months. But, the more you introduce your muscles to Botox your facial muscles can start to train themselves to relax. This means the period time for each treatment may extend longer than 3 to 4 months.

Is it painful?

Many patients explain Botox as a quick pinch.  Many providers will use ice to numb the area, or if patients are extremely fearful he/she may apply topical numbing cream to the area prior to treatment.

Are there side effects?

Common side effects include bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness around injection site. These are all completely normal and will resolve themselves after a few days to a week. To lessen these effects, it’s advised that patients stop consuming alcohol or taking blood thinners such as Ibuprofen one week before treatment.

How long does it take to see results?

Many people new to Botox may become frustrated thinking it didn’t work for them. However, it takes 3 to sometimes 5 days to see results. It’s recommended to wait 14 days to see best results.

When should I start preventative Botox?

To prevent any future lines or wrinkles, most experts agree that starting preventative Botox in your mid to late 20’s or early 30’s is best.

Can I get Botox during my pregnancy?

People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or suffer from any neurological disorders should not use Botox.
