Many of us would like to think that diet and exercise alone will get us to our ideal body. However, all too often, a patient reaches a healthy weight but realizes they still have areas of the body with stubborn fat that just doesn’t seem to go away.

If it sounds familiar, then it may be time to consider non-invasive fat reduction procedures with clinically proven results. In the past, liposuction was the only way to achieve a spot reduction of fat. While it is effective, the anesthesia and post-procedure downtime required are not ideal for all.

In recent years, the advent of non-surgical fat loss procedures has helped countless patients achieve their goals without disrupting their lives. Our practice offers two non-invasive reduction procedures – Coolsculpting and TruSculpt. While the names are similar, these are two different procedures. Below, we’ll outline the differences between them so you can make an informed choice.

Body Sculpting Treatments: Coolsculpting vs TruSculpt At a Glance

Essentially, these procedures use opposite mechanisms to achieve similar results. CoolSculpting uses a machine that exposes fat cells to extreme cold. This freezes the fat cells, causing them to die and be eliminated naturally by the body over time. TruSculpt, on the other hand, heats up the fat cells to destroy them. These cells then shrink and are eliminated by the body.

If you are looking into Coolsculpting vs TruSculpt, it may be helpful to know that Coolsculpting is one of the most researched non-invasive fat removal treatments in history. In the span of a treatment, which usually lasts an hour, a Coolsculpting machine pulls fat into a cup-like device.

The skin that is held in the device then receives a cold treatment that freezes fat cells. Once the cells are frozen, they die, and they are eliminated from the body over about two months. It is safe for patients to go through repeat treatments if necessary.

Is the Procedure Comfortable?

For the first 10 minutes or so of a treatment, patients may feel slight discomfort.  Most describe the feeling as if they just applied ice to the skin. However, the area becomes number after just a few minutes and the discomfort dissipates.

Who is Coolsculpting Best For?

While this option has a variety of applications, it is best for those who have areas of excess fat that can be pinched. This is because the fat needs to be able to be pulled into the Coolsculpting suction device in order to receive treatment. An example area of the body coolsculpting can contour is the back. Bra and back fat are difficult to get rid of, so if you have a small, but pinchable amount of fat, coolsculpting is a great option. Flatter areas of skin or areas that can’t be pinched away from the body may not be able to be treated as efficiently or effectively with cool coolsculpting.

Coolsculpting Results

As a result of Coolsculpting, once frozen, the fat cells die. As the body expels these cells through its natural detoxification process, you’ll begin seeing results. In most cases, you’ll notice a reduction of fat within three weeks. Final results may not appear until up to six months after treatment.

How Does TruSculpt Work?

While Coolsculpting uses suction and cooling, TruSculpt uses a handheld device that delivers radio frequency energy that heats up fat cells. The cells begin to shrink and continue shrinking after the treatment. These cells are eventually eliminated by the body. Unlike Coolsculpting, the TruSculpt device does not need to grab onto areas of skin and excess fat. The TruSculpt treatment can also be repeated if you want further reduction.

Is the Procedure Comfortable?

The heat caused by TruSculpt may cause some mild discomfort or sweating. In general, patients can immediately go back to normal activities, and they don’t generally need pain medications or cooling treatments. If you experience too much discomfort during a TruSculpt session, your provider can adjust the machine settings.

TruSculpt Results

TruScupt triggers your immune system so that it can break down fat cells in the treated areas. This process takes a little longer can Coolsculpting at 4 weeks to 2 months. You’ll begin seeing results anytime during that period and final results may not be noticeable until months later.

Who is TruSculpt Best For?

Because TruSculpt relies on a smaller, handheld device, it is well-suited to those who are thinner or want treatments for areas that a Coolsculpting machine may not be able to grab onto. For instance, areas like the shoulders or the underarms may be too difficult for the Coolsculpting suction, but they can easily be treated with the TruSculpt device. Because of the smaller surface of the TruSculpt, it can easily be used for spot treatments as well. This is another treatment that will help reduce bra bulge and back fat because it is able to target specific areas.

Which Treatment is Best for Me?

TruSculpt and Coolsculpting are both FDA-approved non-invasive alternatives to surgical fat reduction. Both treatments permanently destroy up to 25% of fat cells with each treatment.

While Coolsculpting and TruSculpt are both effective ways to reduce fat, each one is best suited to different body types and different goals.
