Rhinoplasty – Enhancing Facial Harmony

One of the most important procedures at CosmetiCare’s practice in Orange County is rhinoplasty, also known as aesthetic nose surgery or a “nose job.” This procedure can reshape the nose for aesthetic reasons, or may be performed in order to correct a breathing or sinus problem, or to repair a birth defect. The shape of your nose has a big impact on your facial harmony, and most patients are amazed at the difference this one procedure can have on their appearance.

The Importance of Aesthetics

Candidates give many reasons they’re interested in rhinoplasty: concerns about their nose being too wide or too long for their face, wanting a bump on the bridge removed, even feeling that their nostrils are too large or small. Changing your nose can make a big improvement in the way you feel about yourself. Plus, your face is the first thing others see about you, so why not make the best possible impression? Among CosmetiCare’s expert line-up of doctors, Dr. Burr von Maur, M.D., specializes in nose surgery. CosmetiCare makes rhinoplasty in Orange County an easy and comfortable experience.

Individual Results

The key to a successful and effective rhinoplasty is to understand that not every nose will look right on every face. Your nose won’t be a duplicate of someone else’s nose, and there may be limitations as to what we are able to accomplish within your existing facial features and bone structure. With computer imaging software, you can get get an idea of how your new profile will appear, and come up with a solution which addresses your concerns and is uniquely suited to your face.

Medical Necessity

Rhinoplasty is one of the few cosmetic surgery procedures which may be covered by your regular medical insurance. Cases of nasal septal repair, deviated septums, congestion-based chronic headaches, and sinusitis or other sinus problems may all be considered by your insurance company to be a condition which medically requires rhinoplasty.

Scarring and Recovery

Aesthetic nose surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. While there will be some initial swelling and bruising, this usually dissipates in the first week of recuperation. The nose job will continue to subtly refine in shape over the next several months following surgery. As for scarring, there are two possibilities:

  • A closed rhinoplasty uses only incisions placed within the nostrils, so no external marks will be visible.
  • An open rhinoplasty makes a small incision across the skin between the nostrils, so any resulting scar will be placed unobtrusively and be very small.

Which method is used depends on the type of rhinoplasty needed. For example, if repairing a deviated septum, your surgeon may need more internal access than in cases of a solely aesthetic surgery to remove the bump on the bridge of your nose. Very small instruments are used in both surgical method, so chances of scarring after your rhinoplasty are extremely minimal.
