The Lap Band system is an adjustable surgical treatment for obesity. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001 for weight loss in severely obese adults. During the procedure, our surgeons use minimally-invasive laparoscopic techniques to implant the lap band, an inflatable silicone circle that wraps around the upper portion of a patient’s stomach controlling the amount of food digested. The band can be easily adjusted without the need for additional surgery.
Because the digestive capacity of the stomach is reduced, the procedure causes you to feel full with smaller amounts of food, leading to significant amounts of weight loss over time.
