A new drug that will remove localized fat deposits is on the horizon. Bayer Pharmaceutical is starting phase 3 trials on patients of a drug that will remove fat from areas where it is injected. The trials will be run in Europe but an American marketing firm has already been designated. Based on their previous experience Bayer is looking for a license date in 2014. A variety of medications that were supposed to have similar effects have been used in the past including the widely discredited “mesotherapy” which utilized substances that were not even in the pharmacopoeia let alone approved for injection. Having a drug approved for localized fat removal from areas like necks will be a remarkable addition to the practice of plastic surgery.
